Savor in São Luís the exotic Maranhão cuisine, whose stars are cuxá rice (dry shrimp and sesame are part of an African delicacy recipe), fish stews, shrimp pies, desserts and regional fruit juices (such as murici, sapoti and bacuri).
Taste also in the capital of Maranhão, Tiquira, a distilled manioc spirit. They are available in several exotic colors, such as purple, at Mercado da Tulhas, at Comércio square.
In Lençóis Maranhenses always have at hand a bottle or canteen with water (preferably of a special material to keep the water cool), not be dehydrated.
In Mandacaru, still at Lençóis, go to the 54-meter high lighthouse. From there it is possible to watch the dunes bordering Maranhão's sea.
Don't forget putting a sun block on. At Lençóis, the sun gives no truce and the thermometers don't show temperatures below 30ºC. The constant breeze always gives the impression that the sun is not hot.
Lençóis Maranhenses' look comes to be surreal. At climbing an apparently giant dune, the traveler may be surprised to find out a crystalline lagoon down at the end of the dune. The ecosystem was patiently built by the winds, which carry the sand of the beach to the continent, and it was also built by the rains, which brought the water which are today dammed in the dunes.
At the Delta, pay attention to the vegetation of the mangrove swamp. It is Brazil's highest vegetation and may reach up to 30 meters high. It is from the banks of these mangroves that all crabs supplying the competitive stands at Fortaleza beach come from.
Don't miss spending the afternoon at Jericoacoara's dunes. On top of the famous “duna do pôr-do-sol” (sunset dune) you can see the last sunrays dying away at the sea waters. An unforgettable spectacle.
If you wish to know Pedra Furada from Jericoacoara village, be prepared for hiking. However, even if you don't bring water for the course, which lasts over one hour, beverages and snacks are sold at reaching the postcard place.
